Hi,

New to signing. My first assignment went well. I was called at initially at 1pm to see if I can take the assignment. I didn’t get the docs until 4:15 and my appiontment was at 5:30. Thank goodness the appointment wasn’t far away. So if this happens do you just go about your business and take what fee you agreed to at the first phone call or would this be something that should be brought up and renegotiated?

Short notice assignments and late documents go with the territory in this business. You were fortunate to receive the docs over an hour before the appointment; there will be occasions they don’t arrive until after the appointment time!

Roger is correct and it does seem to be happening more and more lately. If you do not already have a cut off time for edocs (mine is 2 hours) you might consider setting one. I do still receive late docs, but I have also been able to turn back some assignments because of late docs that if I had to wait for them I would have not made my other appointments that were scheduled for the same night.

I don’t tell the SS/TC that I will automatically cancel the job, I tell them that I will work with them as long as my schedule will permit for late docs but I do reserve the right to either cancel the job request or if it can be rescheduled after my other appointments I will attempt to do that. I have really not had any issues with any company in regards to this policy, including the few that I have had to turn back.

This policy must be discussed with the companies either at the time they call or as soon as you receive the confirmation. It would be unfair to them to not discuss your cut off policy then attempt to invoke it an hour or so before the appointment. Just remember, if you (meant generally not specifically) want them to show you respect, you must also show respect to them by being upfront with what you expect from them in the business relationship as well.
