Is it necessary to have a laser printer starting out? And what about the signing agencies that charge to sign up with them? Are there enough free ones?

Not necessary to start out with, just be honest with the SS’s and tell them that you are only capable of receiving o/n docs. You won’t get much work, but you will get SOME. As you find yourself actually making a profit, then turn your sights to a LJ printer. Good one: HP 1320 series, I just bought one today for $300, with $100 rebate. Some stores sell this printer for upwards of $500, so it’s a good deal.

To be successful in this business, you will need to have a laser printer. The sooner the better, as edocs are becoming more and more the standard, and the SS will send their business to those who can handle the requirements (hi-speed internet connection as well – you’ll never make it with dial-up).

Howie is right that HP is the best brand for SAs, as they have the proprietary PCL5/6 drivers that enable you to download docs from a number of different websites. This is important, as without them you’ll run across sites that are not compatible with your printer without PCL5 or 6.

DO NOT pay any ss to sign up with them – there are hundreds of free ones, and you’d best sign up with just about all of them to get any business starting out; especially true if you are in a saturated state such as CA or FL.

rogeroh, thanks very much for your information! Especially about the printer. I had one in mind but it was not an hp. I will continue to look. Glad to hear not to sign up with services that charge $$$. I am in AZ (it’s a dry heat!)

I got my first signing offer last night! WhooHoo!!! It took me a few minutes to learn how to download the docs. I was glad to have the time to tinker with it. The signing is today and now I am READY!! I am so glad I already purchased the laser printer you suggested – the HP Laserjet 1320! I am also very glad to have this webpage to have other notary folk to chat with!!
